Oikos Groups

What is an Oikos group?

"Oikos" simply means "house" in the Greek language. House churches were common among the early church and provided valuable opportunities for the spread of the gospel. The church is not a building but is made up of its people.

What is the purpose of the Oikos groups?

The primary purpose of Oikos groups is to build relationships through serving and loving one another, "...until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure

of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ" (Eph. 4: 13). This will occur through the application of the Sunday message, the practicing of the one-anothers, evangelism, and leadership development. It is also our hope that this ministry will begin the process of reproduction within our congregation. In other words, as the groups experience growth and discipleship takes place, new groups will be formed, thereby beginning the process of church planting, which is one of our stated goals.

What will my role be within the group?

Your role will vary based upon spiritual giftedness and a willingness to serve. The goal is for everyone to have a ministry within the group. Oikos will provide a platform for believers to become "doers of the word" and not merely hearers, by serving one another, and by stimulating one another on to love and good deeds.

Who can participate in Oikos groups?

Oikos is an intergenerational ministry for all who wish to grow in conformity to Christ's image. There will be opportunities for adults, youth, and children to learn, serve, and grow. Because evangelism is also a stated goal, you are encouraged to invite unbelieving family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc.

What is the time commitment?

Oikos groups meet for two hours once a week during the second and fourth weeks of the month, from September through the middle of July. This means that they will meet approximately twenty-one times per year as well as whatever time is involved in the various service projects.
